The original dates of the UCI Cyprus Gran Fondo in the Republic of Cyprus (28 March) and Greece’s UCI Aristoteles Chalkidiki Gran Fondo (25 April), both part of the UCI Gran Fondo World Series, have been cancelled due to coronavirus.

The UCI Gran Fondo World Championship qualifying races now hope to take place 25 April in Cyprus and 29 August in Greece.

The decision to cancel and move to new dates was based on 1) government forecasts predicting the European coronavirus situation will not improve for at least 90 days, 2) government travel bans and quarantine requirements limits the events to only local competitors and 3) European airlines are not planning to resume regular flights to Greece and Cyprus until April or later.

“Our top priority is always the health and safety of everyone involved in our events, especially the cyclists.” said UCI Cyprus Gran Fondo organiser Mike Hadjioannou.

Due to uncertainty surrounding the coronavirus situation, cyclists  may register “risk free” for both races since organisers are offering full refunds in the event of cancellation.
