Former professional road racer George Hincapie’s first attempt at organizing a gravel race was short lived – as in it only lasted 14 days before local resident opposition and protest forced him to cancel Gran Fondo Hincapie Gravel.

Planned for 6 March 2021 in Jocassee, South Carolina USA the event was met with high enthusiasm and pre-registrations from a legion of loyal Hincapie fans.

Unfortunately, the local citizens in Jocassee did not share the same enthusiasm for gravel cycling and vehemently opposed the race, which expected 1000+ riders.

At a public meeting last week with local officials Hincapie expected things to go smoothly, but “we were instead met with overwhelming resistance to the Gran Fondo Hincapie Gravel, and this caused us and the [local] officials to reconsider the event. We tried our best, but the audience at this meeting made it clear the Gran Fondo Hincapie Gravel could not take place at this time,” Hincapie said.

He plans on working to find another time and place for Gran Fondo Hincapie Gravel, but gave no timeframe.

Gran Fondo Hincapie Greenville, his flagship event, is planned for 24 October in Greenville, South Carolina with registration spots still available.
