Meeting on 24-25 September in Imola, Italy during the 2020 UCI Road World Championships, the Management Committee of the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) awarded the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships for years 2024 and 2025 to Aalborg, Demark and Melbourne, Australia respectively.
“The events…will enable amateur riders who qualify at different qualification events organised throughout the world to race for the rainbow jersey in their respective category,” the UCI announced.
The northern city of Aalborg has solid experience in the organization of large mass participation sporting events, and Denmark is one of the leading bicycling nations in the world.
The 2025 UCI Gran Fondo World Championships will take place in the Melbourne region of South Australia. The organizer is very experienced with top level cycling event promotion, including the UCI WorldTour Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race and it’s amateur gran fondo event.
The UCI Gran Fondo World Championships are scheduled every year in September.
COVID19 forced the cancellation of the 2020 championships planned for Vancouver, Canada.
2021 UCI Gran Fondo World Championships will be in Banjaluka, Bosnia and Herzegovina.
In 2022 the championship races will be in Trento, Italy and then Glasgow, Scotland in 2023.
