With today’s cancellation of the UCI Leggendaria Charly Gaul Granfondo in Italy, the UCI Gran Fondo World Series lost their last hope of salvaging the season and qualifying European riders for the 2020 Gran Fondo World Championships – if they occur.
Trento Eventi Sport, the Charly Gaul organizer, announced cancellation via Twitter:
” 🇮🇹 LA LEGGENDARIA CHARLY GAUL: due to Covid-19 pandemic the race will be postponed to 2021
After accurate valuations, in order to prioritize the health and safety of our athletes and participants, the organizing committee of La Leggendaria Charly Gaul – UCI Granfondo World Series announces that the race will be postponed until July 9, 10 and 11, 2021.“
To-date, the UCI has cancelled 20 amateur Gran Fondo World Series events that lead up to the World Championships held annually in September. Four events have yet to be cancelled: UCI Around Samcheok in Korea on 4 July, UCI Classique d’Appalaches Gran Fondo in Canada also 4 July, UCI Cache Utah Gran Fondo in USA 11 July and UCI Gran Fondo World Championships in Canada 9 September.
