The German government announced on Thursday that schools would reopen in May but mass participation events, including amateur cycling, will be banned up until 31 August as part of emergency measures to slow down the transmission of coronavirus.
Sporting events, concerts, festivals and trade fairs are just some of the major events in Germany this summer that will now grind to a halt due to the coronavirus pandemic.
For amateur cyclists this means popular German radmarathons including Brezel Race Stuttgart, Arber Radmarathon, EuroEyes Cyclassics, ProAm Hanover and the new Eifel 205 are cancelled.
No decision has been made yet on world-renowned Oktoberfest beer festival, which attracts 6 million people and is scheduled to take place 19 September through 4 October. But according to Bavaria state premier Markus Söder it’s unlikely Oktoberfest will happen.
