Speaking in an address to the nation Monday night, French President Emmanuel Macron announced the extension of nationwide lockdown until at least 11 May and a ban on all mass gathering events, including cycling, until at least mid-July, as the country continues to battle COVID-19.

“Public gatherings, restaurants, cafes and hotels, cinemas, theatres, halls and museums will remain closed at this stage. The big festivals and events with a big audience will not be able to occur until earliest mid-July,” Macron said.

The presidential order cancels dozens of amateur cycling events including the sold out 14,000 rider L’Etape du Tour Nice gran fondo on 5 July.  The event is a one day amateur version of the Tour de France, which has been “postponed.”

Other classic French amateur cycling events cancelled include UCI La Bourgogne, La Pyrenéenne, La Vaujany and La Megève Mont-Blanc.
