Maratona Franja BTC City, part of the 2020 UCI Gran Fondo World Series, has been forced to end the event due to coronavirus.

With mass participation sporting events the world over cancelled due to the virus, the organizing committee for the 39th edition had no option but to end the 12-14 June event in Ljubljana, Slovenia due to the situation.

“The Covid 19 virus pandemic, with its consequences, has swept the entire world and has temporarily halted the organization of mass sporting events, including the legendary Franja BTC City Cycling Marathon. Therefore, the BTC City Marathon Organizing Committee has decided to cancel the event in the circumstances, within the scheduled date of June 12-14, 2020,” they announced on social media.

The committee in consultation with the UCI left the possibility of holding the race in September or October to qualify participants for the 2021 UCI Gran Fondo World Championships in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

So far, 15 of 29 Gran Fondo World Championship qualifying races have been cancelled due to coronavirus, calling into question the validity of trying to proceed with the 2020 UCI Gran Fondo World Championships in Canada in September.
