USA Cycling and Gran Fondo National Championship Series (GFNS) have announced very broad based qualification rules for the 2020 USA Gran Fondo National Championship taking place in Asheville, North Carolina in July.

To qualify, in the 18-months preceding the USA Gran Fondo Cycling National Championships a rider must achieve one of the following:  1) Participate and finish two or more GFNS long events (~100-miles).  2) Top 3 finish in an age group at a GFNS long event.  3) Top 25% age group finish in a GFNS long event.

In addition, riders who finished in the top 25% in their age group at the 2019 UCI Gran Fondo World Championship and riders already qualified for the 2020 UCI Gran Fondo World Championship automatically qualify.

Also, current USA Cycling Amateur or Masters National Champions automatically qualify.

USA Gran Fondo National Champion jerseys and medals will be awarded in the following Men’s and Women’s age group categories 14-22, 23-34, 35-44, 45-54, 55-64, 65-74, 75+.

No special racing license is required to participate in GFNS qualifying events, but to race in the USA Cycling Gran Fondo National Championship riders must have a USA Cycling racing license ($80).

Riders at GFNS qualifying events and the USA Cycling Gran Fondo National Championships will compete over a series of short timed segments, rather than the entire course like traditional European gran fondos and USA Cycling road races.

In 2019 the winning time on the 100-mile GFNS Asheville/USA Cycling Gran Fondo National Championship course was 1:08:11 over four timed segments.
