255 gran fondo riders relished racing through the internationally renowned Viña Santa Cruz vineyard tucked in the Chile’s prestigious Valle de Colchagua at the 2nd Gran Fondo Ruta Del Vino on January 19.
Originally scheduled for December 15, 2019, the event was reschedule due to civil unrest in Chile. The wait was worth it as riders rolled out under sunny clear skies to enjoy the first 50km at a neutral 30km/hr pace.
Offering both a 105km medio fondo and 150km gran fondo route, riders split into two groups at the end of the neutral section. With the warm-up complete the pace quickly rose and soon the out-and-back course was filled with smaller groups working smoothly together rolling past beautiful vineyards towards the Pacific coast.
In the 105km medio fondo, last year’s winner, Camilo Fuentes, continued his winning streak to earn victory in 3:00:30, while Milton Díaz (3:03:34) and Felipe Pérez (3:03: 35) finished 2nd and 3rd. Jessica Muñoz decisively won the women’s race in 3:21:23, 9-minutes ahead of Isidora Solari and Josefa Mijac.
The 150km gran fondo saw another dominant victory with Dominique Lavanchy winning the women’s race in 4:43:14, over 10 minutes in front of rivals Romanet Sepúlveda (4:54:58) and Keyni Urbina (4:56:46). Andrés Tagle won the men’s 150km race with a finishing time of 4:09:52, with David Elgueta 39 seconds behind and Giorgio Nattero another 3:06 back.
