Stage 5 of the Vuelta Espana was lumpy, and bumpy, for Ángel Madrazo (Burgos-BH) as his bid for a stage victory was almost snuffed out when his team car tried to run him over.
Madrazo, wearing the blue polka-dot King of the Mountain leader’s jersey, was in a breakaway that went away from the start with two other riders, teammate Jetse Bol and José Herrada (Cofidis).
They built a huge 10 minute lead over the peloton and were racing for stage victory when Bol was getting a bidon from the Burgos-BH team car and the driver didn’t see Madrazo up the road in front.
The car tagged Madrazo’s back wheel, almost knocking him down and sending him swerving into Herrada and off the road.
Although all three riders were shaken up a bit, the incident didn’t affect the final outcome, where Madrazo crossed the finish line for the stage win – while carefully looking behind to make sure his team manager was not about to run him over…again.
