The UCI has approved new rules making it harder for riders to qualify for the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships in 2020.
Beginning with the first qualifying event of the 2020 season, RBC GranFondo Whister on September 7th, riders must now finish in the top 20% of their age group at a UCI Gran Fondo World Series event to qualify for the annual World Championships.
Up until now, riders could finish in the top 25% and qualify for the worlds.
With the UCI Gran Fondo World Series continuing to rapidly add more riders and more events (10 new in 2020), the rule change will help keep championship field sizes from being too large and unsafe.
At the Gran Fondo World Championships in Varese, Italy last year field sizes for the largest four age groups (M40-44, M45-49, M50-54, M55-59) averaged over 300 riders each.
The rule change may not decrease the world championship field sizes, but it could improve the overall quality and safety of the races.
