Italian Luca Cavallo of OM.CC won the men’s race at the Gran Fondo Il Lombardia Felice Gimondi on Sunday 11 October in Italy, finishing in 03:06:21 on a new course that started in Bergamo for the first time. Simone Impellizzeri (Team Da-Tor / ISB) finished second, 1 minute 33 seconds behind. Lucio Pierantozzi, also of Team Da-Tor / ISB, was third, 3 minutes back. Giovanni Loiscio (Team Eracle) was credited with the same gap in fourth.

Cavallo’s victory followed his back-to-back wins at the Maratona dles Dolomites in July, as previously reported by Gran Fondo Daily News. Impellizzeri finished third in the Medio Fondo at that event.

In the women’s race, Lithuania’s Rasa Rumsaite (ASD La Belle Equipe) won in 03:33:31. Martina Cavallo (OM.CC) finished second, just 6 seconds behind. She was also runner-up at the Maratona dles Dolomites for the second consecutive year and is not related to Luca. Anna Cadorin (Team Staweld Buzzolan) took third, 14 minutes 51 seconds behind.

Organisers of the traditional Italian season-ending race listed the route at 108 kilometres with 2,400 metres of climbing and gradients of up to 17 percent. The course crossed the Valico di Valcava and Selvino and passed through Sedrina, the hometown of Felice Gimondi.

This was the third edition held in Gimondi’s name and came 60 years after his first Il Lombardia victory in 1966. Organisers expected around 2,000 riders. The event closed the Il Lombardia weekend, following Saturday’s professional race from Bergamo to Como, won by 20-year-old Frenchman Paul Seixas.
