Amy’s Great Ocean Road Gran Fondo, held in Lorne, Victoria, on Sunday 13 September, began the qualifying campaign for the 2027 UCI Gran Fondo World Championships in Haute-Savoie, France. The 122km race is one of the world’s longest-running events on the UCI Gran Fondo World Series calendar, having first been held in 2011 in memory of Australian professional cyclist Amy Gillett. The event has previously produced former WorldTour riders among its overall winners.
In the men’s race, Leigh Phillips took overall victory in 03:07:54, holding off a hard-charging chase group. Benson Crick crossed the line 12 seconds back to finish second, with Ryan Wain just one second further adrift in third.
The women’s competition was won by Dani Chattenton in 03:17:10. Eloise Milbourn took second, 6 minutes and 38 seconds back, edging out Carly Coventry by a single second for the final podium spot.
As with all UCI Gran Fondo World Series events, riders finishing in the top 25% of their age and gender category earn qualification for next year’s world championships. With age groups running from 18-34 through to 80+, thousands of amateur riders across the full field were competing not just for placings and personal glory on the Great Ocean Road, but for a starting bib in France in 2027.
