A California teenager stole the show on Saturday at Canada’s RBC GranFondo Whistler, one of North America’s largest amateur cycling events, held along the famous Sea to Sky Highway between Vancouver and Whistler Ski Resort in British Columbia.
Nathan Peterson, 19, of Pleasanton, California, crossed the line first in the roughly 122-kilometre Gran Fondo distance in 03:31:34, edging North Vancouver’s David Collings by just 4 seconds and Vancouver’s Paul Mottat by 6 seconds to complete an extremely tight podium on a demanding route.
In the women’s race, Vancouver’s Mackenzie Fleming took the title in 03:42:29. Carolyn Russell, also of Vancouver and the event’s reigning women’s champion from 2025, finished second, 2 minutes 50 seconds back, with Victoria Leader of Vancouver rounding out the podium 11 minutes 34 seconds behind the winner.
More than 1,000 riders finished the point-to-point course, which remains one of the only fully traffic-free Gran Fondo routes in North America, drawing entrants from across Canada, the United States and beyond.
