A club cyclist was killed and two teammates were injured on Tuesday 08 September 2026 when a car struck them on the A8 near Port Glasgow, in western Scotland.
Police Scotland said the collision happened at around 19:10 on the westbound carriageway between the Langbank and Woodhead roundabouts. It involved a blue Ford C-Max Zetec and three cyclists. A 46-year-old man died at the scene. Two other riders, aged 27 and 37, were taken to hospital, along with the 33-year-old driver, who has since been released. Police enquiries into the full circumstances are ongoing.
The rider who died was Iain McTavish, a member of Johnstone Wheelers Cycling Club, who was out on a training ride with two clubmates at the time. He finished sixth overall in the Glasgow Track League earlier this year and, according to a separate report, also placed second in the club standings for the 2025/2026 season.
Johnstone Wheelers paid tribute on social media, saying members were “devastated at the loss of one of cycling’s good guys.” Scottish Cycling added that McTavish was “a stalwart of the Renfrew bunch and Georgetown TTs” and had attended every round of last year’s Track League as the rider representative on its committee.
The tragedy follows a separate fatal collision involving cyclists in Kent days earlier, renewing concern within the UK cycling community over rider safety on shared roads. Cycling Scotland has identified driver behaviour, including inattention and close passing, as a major factor in serious vehicle-cyclist crashes, particularly on rural or high-speed roads.
