British rider Finlay Tarling has died at the age of 19 following a serious accident during stage eight of the Volta a Portugal, race organisers and the Portuguese Cycling Federation confirmed on Friday 14 August 2026.
The Welsh time-trial specialist, who rode for the NSN Development Team, was involved in the incident on the 166.8km stage between Melgaço and Fafe. Portuguese broadcaster RTP reported Tarling was struck by a driver not affiliated with the race. The incident was reported at around kilometre 90, near Ponte de Lima. Tarling received immediate medical attention but died shortly afterwards.
The stage was neutralised with roughly 23km remaining, and the planned podium ceremony in Fafe was cancelled as a mark of respect. Race organisers initially described the incident only as a “serious accident”, without confirming the precise circumstances. Portuguese media, however, reported it was a head-on crash involving a non-race vehicle travelling in the wrong direction.
The NSN Development Team confirmed the loss of their rider in a statement, describing him as a much-loved teammate and extending condolences to his parents, Michael and Dawn, and his brother, Ineos Grenadiers professional Josh Tarling.
Tarling had joined NSN ahead of the 2025 season and was considered a highly rated talent, having won three bronze medals at the 2024 UCI Junior Track Cycling World Championships.
An investigation into the circumstances of the crash is expected to follow.
