A close-knit corner of New Jersey’s amateur cycling community is mourning the loss of Rocco Della Serra, 65, of Cranford, a longtime member of the American All On Cycling Club, who died Thursday 06 August 2026 after being struck by a vehicle while riding.
According to Union County Prosecutor William A. Daniel, Mountainside police responded around 7:30 p.m. to the intersection of Route 22 and New Providence Road following reports of a hit-and-run involving a cyclist. Investigators allege that Fabian Parra, 35, of North Plainfield, was driving west on Route 22 under the influence of alcohol when he ran a red light, struck Della Serra and continued driving without stopping. Parra was located roughly three miles away by Scotch Plains police and taken into custody. He faces second-degree charges of vehicular homicide and leaving the scene of a fatal crash and remains held at Essex County Jail awaiting his next court appearance.
All On Cycling Club, based in Union County, announced Della Serra’s death on social media, describing him as a fixture of the club’s Wednesday Cranford group rides who was as well liked off the bike as he was strong on it. The club said it will hold a memorial and ghost bike installation in his honor on Wednesday 26 August 2026, with further details to follow.
Della Serra recently retired after 42 years with the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities, with plans to spend more time cycling and running — he also competed in 20 Boston Marathons.
