A cycling club in Normandy is mourning the loss of longtime member Martine Renaux, 67, who was struck and killed by a van while marshalling the Terroir de Caux Challenge race on Sunday 19 July 2026.

She was stationed at a road junction on the D50 near Heugleville-sur-Scie, close to Tôtes in the Seine-Maritime region, during the fourth round of the Terroir de Caux Challenge organised by local club Tôtes 3 Rivières. She was wearing a high-visibility yellow vest when the van struck her at approximately 14:15. The driver failed to stop.

Emergency services arrived shortly afterwards and found Renaux in cardiac arrest. Despite their efforts, she could not be revived. The race was halted immediately.

Tôtes 3 Rivières organisers described Renaux as a devoted volunteer and offered their condolences. She was also a longstanding member of the Auto Cycle Sottevillais club, where she raced competitively during the 2010s, winning the women’s category at the Moulineaux hill climb in 2013 and finishing first in her age group at the 110 km La Maître Jacques event later that year. The club has called for renewed attention to road safety and the vulnerability of cyclists following her death.

The Dieppe prosecutor’s office confirmed on Monday 20 July that a suspect had been taken into custody on preliminary charges of vehicular homicide and failing to stop at the scene of an accident— an aggravating factor under French law that can increase the maximum sentence to ten years’ imprisonment. No further details about the suspect have been released.

Gran Fondo Daily News extends its deepest condolences to Martine Renaux’s family, friends and teammates at Auto Cycle Sottevillais.
