Jakub Solovsky, 34, a well-known figure in the San Francisco Bay Area amateur cycling community, was killed on Saturday 11 July 2026 while riding along Skyline Boulevard (State Route 35) in Woodside, California.
According to the California Highway Patrol, a 28-year-old driving a Porsche northbound at high speed failed to negotiate a curve shortly before 11:30 a.m., crossed into the southbound lane and struck Solovsky head-on. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver, the vehicle’s sole occupant, was uninjured, and investigators say drugs and alcohol do not appear to have been factors. The crash remains under investigation.
Solovsky, an East Palo Alto resident, was a member of the Western Wheelers Bicycle Club, a Palo Alto-based amateur road cycling club with several hundred members across the San Francisco Peninsula. Fellow riders described him as a regular ride leader who guided groups over some of the Santa Cruz Mountains’ toughest climbs, including Mount Umunhum, Alba Road, Soda Springs Road, Black Road and Highway 9 — routes that wind through the same mountains as Skyline Boulevard, where he lost his life.
Solovsky’s death adds to a troubling run of serious cycling incidents in the Santa Cruz Mountains, an area prized by riders for some of Northern California’s finest road cycling. On Thursday 29 May, three participants in Silicon Valley’s long-running Noon Ride were struck by a hit-and-run driver on nearby Alpine Road. One rider suffered severe injuries, including a neck laceration, before the vehicle’s occupants fled on foot. That crash followed the death of another cyclist in the same area earlier in May, prompting growing concern among local riders about safety on these once-trusted training routes.
