Johnny Hoogerland added another line to his prolific amateur palmarès on Sunday 05 July, besting Poland’s Jan Miazga to win the 161km Gran Fondo at the inaugural UCI Gran Fondo World Series edition of the Tour de Mátra in Gyöngyös, Hungary.

The 43 year-old Dutch former professional, now a fixture on Europe’s gran fondo circuit a decade after his career-defining Tour de France crash, crossed the line in 04:18:43. Miazga followed 21 seconds later, with Poland’s Łukasz Janowski completing the podium 39 seconds back. The 143-rider men’s field climbed from Gyöngyös to a mountaintop finish at Kékestető, Hungary’s highest point, on a course making its World Series debut.

Austria’s Brigitte Filensky topped a smaller but competitive women’s Gran Fondo field, winning in 04:54:44. Poland’s Martyna Wiśniewska took second, 26 minutes 13 seconds behind, ahead of Slovakia’s Tímea Raábová, who finished third at 43 minutes 38 seconds.

In the 94km Medio Fondo, Hungarian riders swept both overall titles. Tamás Bárány won the men’s race in 02:37:16, with Sebestyén Lányi second at 7 minutes 2 seconds, from a field of 390 riders. Aliz Ambrusics claimed the women’s title in 03:07:08, holding off Virág Benedek by 3 minutes 14 seconds among 40 finishers.

Friday’s opening 19km time trial through Gyöngyös, the event’s other World Championship qualifying discipline, was won by László Záray in 22 minutes 58 seconds. Anneleen Bosma took the women’s victory in 26 minutes 18 seconds.

The event marked the first visit by the UCI Gran Fondo World Series to Hungary, offering World Championship qualification to riders finishing in the top 25 percent of their age category.
