Keegan Swenson and Sofia Gomez Villafañe claimed victories at SBT GRVL presented by Wahoo on Sunday, with the Specialized-sponsored couple — who are married — extending their dominance as the first half of the gravel calendar came to a close on the champagne gravel of Routt County, Colorado.
Swenson secured his fourth SBT GRVL title with a 20-mile solo attack, pulling clear of a lead group that included Cobe Freeburn, Henry Nelson and Adam Roberge. Alexey Vermeulen came from behind to claim second place, while Freeburn edged Nelson in a sprint for the final podium spot. Swenson stopped the clock in 04:36:20, with Vermeulen and Freeburn both finishing in 04:41:26, 5 minutes 6 seconds behind.
In the women’s race, the decisive move came on Wahooligan Pass, where Sarah Lange launched a bold solo attack that shattered the lead group. Lange held her advantage through the technical Cow Creek descent, but Villafañe reeled her in on the closing paved kilometres before attacking with one kilometre remaining. Villafañe won in 05:25:01, just 6 seconds ahead of Lange, while national gravel champion Lauren Stephens — runner-up at the USA National Road Championships a week earlier — finished a further 42 seconds back in third.
The 108-mile race rolled out from Yampa Street in downtown Steamboat Springs, climbing Cow Creek before ascending towards Trout Creek and Wahooligan Pass, then crossing the ranch lands towards Hayden. Elite and amateur fields started separately.
In the amateur race, Oliver Rutberg topped the men’s field in 05:01:58, while Christina Cole won the women’s division in 05:42:49.
SBT GRVL presented by Wahoo is a world-class gravel event held annually in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. With more than 1,500 starters, the race has firmly established itself as one of North America’s premier gravel events.
