A tragic accident near Palermo has once again shaken the Italian cycling community, claiming the life of Mirela Nicoleta Rusu, 41, on a road connecting Monreale with the province’s inland regions after a car struck a group of riders on a training ride.

Born in Romania and a long-time resident of the Palermo area, Rusu was riding with three teammates along Statale 186 toward Palermo when a Fiat 500X allegedly attempted to overtake the group on a section of road marked with a solid white line. She died at the scene. Her partner, who was riding alongside her, sustained moderate injuries and was transferred to Ingrassia Hospital in Palermo. The two other members of the group escaped physical injury but were badly shaken.

The driver, identified as Giuseppe Lucia, 38, tested negative on a breathalyser administered at the scene. He remained at the site and cooperated with investigators. The Palermo Prosecutor’s Office has opened a road homicide investigation.

Federciclismo Sicilia paid tribute to Rusu, a member of ASD Sport e Nutrition who finished 8th at Granfondo Ceramica in 2025, recalling her “infectious smile” and deep love of cycling. The organisation described the incident as Italy’s 101st cycling fatality of 2026, and yet another road homicide that is “no longer acceptable, no longer bearable.”

The tragedy was not even Italy’s first cycling fatality that day. Just hours earlier, and some 1,000 kilometres to the north, 14-year-old mountain bike racer Adele Cobelli died after being struck by a car near her home in Pressano, Trentino. A vehicle travelling uphill crossed into her lane on a downhill bend and hit her head-on, throwing her over a roadside guardrail. Cobelli, who raced for ASD Bike Movement Trentino Erbe and won the provincial Esordienti Donne championship the previous season, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Italy’s cyclist death toll in 2025 was already 22 per cent higher than the previous year, with national statistics agency Istat identifying distracted driving, failure to yield, and excessive speed as the leading causes of crashes involving cyclists. The deaths of Rusu and Cobelli on the same day will only intensify concerns over cyclist safety on Italian roads.

Gran Fondo Daily News extends its condolences to the families, teammates, and friends of Mirela Nicoleta Rusu and Adele Cobelli.
