Three cyclists participating in Silicon Valley’s legendary Noon Ride were struck by a reportedly black BMW sedan at approximately 13:30 on Thursday 29 May on Alpine Road near Portola Valley, California. The occupants immediately abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot after the collision, according to the California Highway Patrol.

One cyclist suffered major injuries and was rushed to hospital. The two other riders were treated at the scene.

Eyewitness accounts posted to Reddit, however, describe injuries far more severe than initial reports suggested. One commenter identifying as a friend of the most seriously injured rider wrote that the victim “will survive the neck laceration that nearly caused him to bleed to death” and confirmed the rider had been discharged from the ICU by Friday 30 May.

Another witness at the scene described a “massive neck laceration as the primary injury along with broken scapula, clavicle and jaw.”

The suspected driver is described by CHP as a woman in her 30s with blonde hair, dressed entirely in black and carrying an orange phone case. The two male passengers who fled alongside her remain unidentified. Whether the vehicle was stolen has not been confirmed, and no arrests have been announced.

The Noon Ride — taking place every weekday at 12 noon sharp for the past 50 years — has drawn Silicon Valley tech workers, venture capitalists, local Olympians and professional athletes to the Palo Alto foothills for a spirited ride, making Thursday’s collision a gut punch to a tight-knit community that treats Alpine Road as home turf.

In May, another cyclist was killed after being struck in the same area, adding to growing concerns about safety on roads long regarded as among the best for cycling in Northern California.
