Belgian cycling lost one of its brightest young talents last week, when Jilke Michielsen, born 05 January 2007, died at the age of 19 after a prolonged battle with Ewing sarcoma, a rare and aggressive form of bone cancer.
In 2022, Michielsen won the Belgian National Road Race Championship in the rookie category, and the following year claimed the title again in the second-year junior category. She also added national titles in the time trial and on the track, establishing herself as one of the most decorated young riders in Belgian cycling.
At the end of 2023, she received her diagnosis, yet chose to continue studying biomedical sciences at the University of Antwerp while undergoing chemotherapy. In the summer of 2024, she was declared cancer-free — a moment that brought real hope. Sadly, the disease returned in early 2025, this time deemed incurable.
In one of her final public updates, she announced that she could no longer continue chemotherapy, as her body had reached its limit. News of her passing was shared through her Instagram account alongside the words she had made her own: “Don’t complain, just enjoy.”
Tributes flowed immediately. Belgian Cycling’s national team wrote: “We will always remember your beautiful smile, your strong fighting spirit and optimism. Our heartfelt thoughts go out to her family and friends.”
Pro rider Lore De Schepper of AG Insurance-Soudal, a close friend, wrote: “Last week I still received a message from Jilke saying she was proud of how well I was doing in the Vuelta. She was watching every day. And now, a week later, she is no longer here.”
Jilke Michielsen never turned professional, but she left a mark that few professionals ever achieve — on the sport and on everyone who followed her journey.
