UPDATE 11 May 2026: Article updated with additional driver and cyclist information according to FHP.

Three cyclists were seriously injured and a third hospitalised early Saturday morning 9 May 2026, after a white Chevrolet pickup truck drifted into a group of riders on East Voorhis Avenue near DeLand, Florida at 06:53.

The group of 14 was travelling eastbound in a double paceline — two rows of seven riders — when the westbound vehicle crossed into their path. Cyclist Francisco Salinas, who was riding with the group, said four to six riders at the front spotted the truck in time and managed to veer clear. Riders at the back were struck. According to FHP, the injured cyclists were local riders aged 29, 33, 37, 38, 41, 42 and 49.

Emergency workers were immediately called to the mass casualty scene. Three of the injured were airlifted to Central Florida hospitals with serious injuries. A fourth, identified as Ryan Flesch, the manager of JC’s Bikes and Boards, was transported by ambulance to a local DeLand hospital. Salinas confirmed all riders were wearing helmets and had lights fitted to their bicycles.

The pickup driver, 30 year old DeLandite Antonio Lenard Frazier, remained at the scene. The Florida Highway Patrol has cited him with failure to maintain his lane — a noncriminal traffic ticket infraction with — while continuing to investigate the crash.

“We all understand these risks, but you don’t want it to happen to anybody,” said Pete Shelton, a regular member of the group who was not riding that morning.

The West Volusia Beacon, which first reported the story, described a scene of water bottles, broken bikes and injured riders scattered across the road.

As this is a developing story, Gran Fondo Daily News will continue to monitor local sources for additional details.
