The Welsh Championship 25-mile Time Trial was cancelled on Saturday 03 May after a serious crash involving rider James Kelly, 49, prompted organisers to halt the race and request emergency medical services, including an air ambulance.
The incident occurred during the championship event in south Wales, with race officials stopping the competition while Kelly received emergency treatment at the roadside before being transferred to hospital for further assessment. Images circulating on social media showed the dual carriageway shut down with a Wales Air Ambulance in attendance alongside emergency crews.
Event organiser Martyn Heritage-Owen later confirmed that Kelly had been taken to hospital in Merthyr Tydfil for a CT scan, adding that the rider was expected to make a full recovery.
Organisers subsequently praised the response of the Wales Air Ambulance and donated all entry fee profits, along with fees returned from officials, to the Wales Air Ambulance Service.
Kelly later issued his own update through social media, revealing he had suffered a broken elbow, facial stitches, road rash and multiple cuts and bruises in the crash.
“I’m bruised, battered and cut but ok,” he wrote, while also thanking the air ambulance crew, St John Ambulance staff and hospital workers involved in his care.
The rider also apologised to competitors and spectators after the cancellation of what had been expected to be one of the key events on the Welsh domestic time trial calendar.
The Welsh Championship 25 TT traditionally attracts leading riders from across Wales and western Britain, all competing for national honours over the classic 25-mile distance.
