A Polish woman has died after crashing on the Sa Calobra road in Mallorca’s Serra de Tramuntana on Wednesday 15 April 2026, the latest fatality to strike the island’s busiest cycling season.

The woman, whose name has not yet been released, lost control of her bicycle at kilometre 10.3 of the Ma-2141 road while descending from Sa Calobra around 14:25. She plunged 15 metres off the road and landed on a rocky, vegetation-covered slope. Witnesses alerted emergency services, as the cyclist was unable to do so herself.

Mountain rescue teams from the Bombers de Mallorca’s Sóller unit and SAMU 061 paramedics reached the technically difficult location and worked to resuscitate the woman for an extended period. Despite their efforts, she was pronounced dead at the scene from multiple traumas and cardiorespiratory arrest. She had been on holiday with her husband, who was contacted at their hotel in El Arenal. The Guardia Civil’s Judicial Police from Inca have taken charge of the investigation.

The tragedy unfolds during Mallorca’s peak cycling window, when tens of thousands of international riders descend on the island each spring to train on its legendary climbs ahead of the Mallorca 312 gran fondo. The Sa Calobra climb on Ma-2141, a serpentine route with 26 hairpin turns ascending 660 metres, is among the most sought-after roads in European cycling. The descent, though, is notoriously fast, unforgiving and fraught with danger at every corner.

The island’s biggest annual cycling event, the 8,500 rider Mallorca 312 taking place on 24 April, underscores the scale of cycling tourism that makes Mallorca a year-round, albeit dangerous, destination for amateur riders.
