Newport Beach Police have made an arrest in the road rage incident that targeted two elite Southern California cyclists last week.
Samir Weiss was taken into custody following a warrant served in the city of Corona. He faces a charge of assault with a deadly weapon. A blue BMW M3 — the vehicle seen on widely circulated footage pursuing USA U23 Criterium National Champion Luke Fetzer and Valley of the Sun winner Ben Byra along Pacific Coast Highway — was seized as evidence.
The arrest brings a significant development to a case that drew widespread outrage from the cycling community. The two riders were deliberately menaced during a training ride on Saturday 22 March 2026, with footage showing the BMW closing to within inches of their rear wheels at speed.
The charge of assault with a deadly weapon — the vehicle itself — signals that authorities are treating the incident with the gravity it deserves. The investigation into other individuals involved in the confrontation remains ongoing.
