Brazilian para-triathlete Ronan Nunes Cordeiro, 29, is now likely to be stripped of his Paris 2024 Paralympic silver medal after the International Paralympic Committee Independent Anti-Doping Tribunal upheld a doping charge against him at a hearing held on January 28, 2026, finding that he had committed an anti-doping rule violation and imposing the full consequences requested by the IPC.

Cordeiro represented Brazil at the 2024 Summer Paralympics and won a silver medal in the PTS5 triathlon event. His road to the podium was remarkable — from a fifth-place finish at Tokyo 2020 to a bronze at the 2021 World Championships, the young athlete had steadily climbed toward the sport’s pinnacle.

However, his urine sample collected on September 2, 2024, the day of his Paralympic competition, revealed the anabolic androgenic steroid norandrostenediol in his system. More precisely, the prohibited substance was 19-norandrosterone (19-NA), classified under WADA’s 2024 Prohibited List as a non-Specified Substance under class S1.1 Anabolic Androgenic Steroids, banned at all times.

19-NA is the primary urinary metabolite of nandrolone, an anabolic steroid known for its muscle-building effects that has been prohibited in sport since the 1970s. For endurance athletes competing across swimming, cycling, and running, its performance-enhancing potential is significant across all three disciplines.

Cordeiro denied the charge and requested a hearing, but the tribunal ruled against him. The case has now been referred to World Triathlon for sanctioning.
