Jorge Mariz and Susana Lourenço claimed the top honours at the 2026 Viana Granfondo by KTM, as the Alto Minho region hosted the traditional opener to the Portuguese gran fondo season on Sunday 15 March.
825 riders faced either a 129km gran fondo or 87 km medio fondo course, with the longer delivering a challenging 2115 metres of elevation gain starting from Viana do Castelo.
MEN: MARIZ COMES OUT AHEAD IN THE FINALE
Jorge Mariz rode tacticly and smartly all day to delivered a win for team Penacova Firstbike Reconco in the men’s gran fondo, besting his two breakaway companions in the final sprint with a total time 3:24:26. It was a heartbreaking loss for Love Tile teammates Goncalo Freitas and Pedro Merendeiro, who despite outnumbering Mariz came up short to finish second and third.
WOMEN GRAN FONDO: LOURENCO WINS FOR LOVE TILES
On the other hand, the Love Tiles team took a commanding win in the women’s Gran Fondo, with Susana Lourenço standing tall on the podium at day’s end. She finishing in 4:01:16 with Tamára Branco of Brinox Cycling Team arriving 14 seconds later to complete a Portuguese one-two. Spain provided the next two finishers – Isabel Alonso of Cansinos Bike in third overall at 4:29:24, with compatriot Lara L of CDM Xesteiras fourth.
MEDIOFONDO: TOP HONOURS FOR TEIXEIRA DUO
Out on the 84km medio fondo route it was Tiago Teixeira (DBL Bike) sprinting for his second Viana victory with a final time of 2:35:16. Alessia Teixeira (Penacova Firstbike Reconco) claimed the women’s medio title in 2:51:59.
The Portuguese Bikeservice gran fondo series continues on 12 April in Campo Maior for the Eurobec Granfondo.
