Gravel racing has always rewarded grit and determination. Now it can also fatten your bank account. Prize purses that once felt like the exclusive domain of pro road cycling’s elite have been migrating steadily into the gravel world – and the inaugural Lewis & Clark Gravel Classic, set for 25 July 2026 in Cascade Montana USA, is helping lead the way.
The numbers are hard to ignore: $20,950 USD in prize money spread across 116-mile and 62-mile gravel races, with $3500 on the line for both the men’s and women’s long route champions. Also, each age group category winner will earn $250. For a debut event, that’s a statement. Race organizers are putting big money on the table from day one.
That approach fits perfectly with where gravel racing is headed. The Life Time Grand Prix series recently boosted its total prize pool to a whopping $590K for 2026. Their Unbound Gravel race now offers $60K alone. Following suit, the 2026 Lauf Gravel Worlds in Nebraska has a prize pool of $150K. The message from cycling’s hottest and newest discipline is clear: talent deserves compensation, and organizers are stepping up with big bucks.
The Lewis & Clark Gravel Classic offers more than prize money, of course. The epic 116-mile “Clark” long route – 82% gravel – carves a exciting counter-clockwise loop through the Helena-Lewis and Clark National Forest and the stunning Missouri River canyon, gaining over 9000 feet of elevation before finishing back in Cascade.
Plus, you can make it a Montana twofer race weekend. Ride Lewis & Clark Gravel Classic on Saturday, maybe collect a check, and then head over to Whitefish and Glacier National Park for Sunday’s The Last Best [Gravel] Ride.
