On Wednesday the Turkish Cycling Federation announced athlete Mustafa Ayyorkun (SPOR TOTO CYCLING) was involved in a serious crash during the Tour of Iran race and died as a result of his injuries.
The promising 21 year-old crashed hard during Stage 5 on Saturday 31 May 2025, seriously injuring his spine and neck. Emergency medical workers were immediately on-scene and quickly transported him to hospital. Although the initial prognosis was positive, unfortunately on Tuesday night 3 June his condition took a turn for the worse and he suddenly passed away.
Turkish Cycling Federation President Emin Müftüoğlu commented on the tragedy, “From the moment of the accident that occurred during the race, we were in close contact with the Ministry of Youth and Sports, our Embassy of the Republic of Turkey in Tehran and our Consulate of Tabriz and the Iranian authorities. We have followed the process meticulously since Saturday. We received information from the hospital that he had a crack in his neck and that he would be kept under control for three days. The health condition of our athlete was positive. However, the news of the sudden death that came last night shook us all deeply. We are very sorry. Mustafa Ayyorkun was a great value for Turkish cycycling.”
Ayyorkun was a 2x Turkish Junior National Road Champion with a very promising future. Just two days before his fateful crash, he finished an impressive 7th on Stage 2 of the Tour of Turkey.
