The lakeside community of Morbisch on the shores of Neusiedler Lake in eastern Austria hosted UCI Gran Fondo World Championship qualifying races this past weekend, with a time trial on Saturday and radmarathon fondo on Sunday.
Dominating the weekend by winning both the 26km time trial and 125km radmarathon was 43 year-old Polish rider Martnya Wisniewska(ZAREBSKI TEAM).
After finishing second at the UCI Gran Fondo Cyprus Time Trial in April, Wisniewska moved to the top of the women’s podium by completing Saturday’s time trial first in 41:58. Next to stop the clock were Jaqueline Lischka at 43:00 and Jose Smolders in 43:30.
Wisniewska’s margin of victory was even larger on Sunday, finishing the 125km radmarathon solo in 3:14:11. Anna Scherer was next fastest at 3:17:23, with Larissa Azmon right behind in to third place.
For the men it was fellow Polish rider Gracjan Szelag (WALBET TEAM) who was fastest over the radmarathon route, earning the win in 2:50:48. The 30 year-old out sprinted Jeroen Van Voorden and Michiel Kok who took the final podium places one second later.
37 year-old Martin Geretschnig of Austria won the men’s time trial by over one minute, finishing in 35:06. Daniel Szalay was second with a time of 36:15 and youngster Matthias Jeinal, 24, claimed third at 36:33.
Competitors finishing in the top 25% of their age/gender category in the time trial or radmarathon qualified for the 2025 UCI Grand Fondo World Championships taking place 15-18 October in Australia.
