UPDATE 20 APRIL 2025: Matthew Lefthand has set a new 24hr virtual cycling world record
Barely two years after clipping in for the first time and taking cycling seriously, Matthew Lefthand rocked the ultra-cycling world in February by setting a new USA 24 hour non-drafting distance record of 927 kilometers.
The 33 year-old from the State of Utah, who recently switched to cycling from marathon running, accomplished the unprecedented feat 15-16 February in humid, warm and flat Sebring, Florida, averaging a blistering 38.5 km/h.
With a motto of “it is up to your will, not you legs,” Lefthand now has his sights set on breaking the 1026km Guiness World Record for 24 hours of virtual cycling. The attempt will take place on the Zwift virtual platform 19 April and be streamed live from the ENVE Composites Headquarters in Ogden, Utah.
As part of his 50,000+ kilometers of training per year at an elevation of 1400 meters, Lefthand did a virtual record “test” ride in January on Zwift, completing 828 kilometers (including almost 10,000 meters of elevation gain) in 23:35:30 at 35 km/h with a power output of 266 watts.
With those impressive numbers the world record certainly looks within reach since Lefthand’s attempt will be on Zwift’s flattest route – Tempus Fugit – with only 16 meters of elevation over 17.3 kilometers.
Chapeau Matthew 👍
