On 26 October 2025 gravel racers will have the opportunity to compete for the sports biggest prize payout at the newest must-do epic race – Gravel Burn in South Africa.
The seven-day stage race covering 850km is the brainchild of Kevin Vermaak, founder of the world famous Absa Cape Epic MTB stage race.
Taking place in the Great Karoo, one of the world’s last remaining vast desert wilderness areas, Gravel Burn hopes to set a new standard as the world’s premier gravel bike event, with a corresponding prize purse of $150,000.
“For professional riders who make a living in the sport, this prize purse underscores our commitment to setting a new benchmark in gravel racing,” Vermaak said.
South Africa’s three-time Cape Epic winner and 2024 BWR Champion Matt Beers is looking forward chasing after gravel’s biggest prize purse.
“This changes everything. Gravel Burn focuses on stage racing in the gravel category, Beers said. “A prize purse of this magnitude shows how serious gravel cycling has become. It’s a big step toward further professionalising the discipline and giving it the recognition it deserves. It will also motivate international gravel racers, especially from the U.S. to come to South Africa to compete.”
Although not racing for cash, amateur age group graveleurs can compete alongside professionals over the entire 850km route, seeing how they stack up against the world’s best riders while vying for daily leader jerseys and overall general classification honors.
