On 19 October Gran Fondo Hincapie in Greenville, South Carolina will turn into a USD$1M Hurricane Helene relief fundraising event headlined by Tour de France celebrities Mark Cavendish, Bradley Wiggins, Jan Ulrich and George Hincapie.
The massive devastation left in the wake of Hurricane Helene in late September wiped out towns, roads and communities which have hosted Gran Fondo Hincapie aid stations, cheered on riders and partnered with the event for the past thirteen years.
Now the event aims to give back, helping hard hit local communities recover and rebuild.
“We initially thought that we were going to cancel the event,” said Hincapie. “But then I realized that we could use the Gran Fondo to draw attention to the massive devastation in our area and turn the entire thing into a huge fundraising effort.”
The gran fondo, open to cyclists of all abilities, will take place on loops of a new 19-mile course that is completely within Greenville County as to not take away from ongoing hurricane recovery resources in North and South Carolina.
To help reach the USD$1M fundraising target, in addition to the ride, a VIP gourmet dinner, post-ride party and live auction will give participants the opportunity contribute relief funds and meet 35x Tour de France stage winner Mark Cavendish, as well as former Tour de France champions Bradley Wiggins (2012) and Jan Ulrich (1997).
