Set on the stunning eastern side of California’s Sierra Nevada Mountains, Mammoth Gran Fondo is one of the most popular cycling events in North America, with the 29th edition taking place Saturday 7 September.
1400 cyclists journeyed to the high alpine city of Mammoth Lakes (7800′ elevation) to participate, with most opting to ride the 102-mile gran fondo route that rolls under the shadows of stunning alpine peaks.
29 year-old James Kinney was fastest, winning in 4:22:01 after nipping breakaway companion Ethan Puente, just 18, at the finish. Three minutes later Brian Washburn pedaled under the finish banner to take third place.
Paige Handy, 30, claimed the women’s title in 4:58:38, followed by Kelsey Andrist and Shelly Mos.
Up and coming 15 year-old Keon Namazie defeated riders two, three and four times older in the 70-mile men’s medio fondo, finishing solo in 3:23:37. Caroline Britton won for the women in 3:31:34.
Josh Fairchilds and Leile Hijazi won the 42 mile piccolo fondo in 2:18:02 and 2:47:48 respectively for the men and women.
