The Italian gran fondo season is off to a roaring start, with the highly competitive Coppa Piemonte Cup series holding its first race this past weekend at Granfondo Valtidone. In perfect springtime conditions over 1200 competitors took to the starting grid of 116km gran fondo and 87km medio fondo routes through the hilly wine region just south of Milan.

Arriving first in plaza Pianello Valtidone on the gran fondo route was Alberto Nardin (Team Bike Pancalieri) in 3:02:43, followed by Paolo Castelnovo and Andrea Miotto one second later.

In the women’s competition, Roberta Bussone (Rodman Team) earned victory in 3:25:13, with Giulia Portaluri and Valeria Zecchettin next.

Francesco Di Bratto (Team BCP Bike) for the men and Emile Bottini (Team MP Filtri) for the women claimed victory in the medio fondo.

The six race Coppa Piemonte Cup is a points based series awarding both gran fondo and medio fondo titles, plus leader’s jerseys, in the following categories: Men U30, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70+ and Women U39, 40-49, 50+.

In addition, with a strict anti-doping policy the series requires any competitor who returns a positive anti-doping test results within six months of an event to pay the organizer € 50,000.00, which will be donated to support youth sports.

The second race in the series takes place in Pavia at Gran Fondo di Casteggio on 14 April.
