Like the classic European race it is named after, Barry-Roubaix in Barry County, Michigan USA challenged over 4000 graveleurs to make it to the finish line after miles and miles of rolling gravel roads, rough double track, rock and sand. With temperatures well above 60F, no wind and clear skies, it was a welcomed change from last year’s Arctic conditions.
The largest and most successful gravel race in the country offered over $40,000 USD in prizes across four race distances –
18-mile Chiller, 36-mile Thriller, 62-mile Killer and the absurd 100-mile Psycho Killer with over 7000 feet of climbing.
Geno Villafano (4:53:06 M) and Erin Omara (5:37:58 W) took top honors in the Psycho Killer race from a field of almost 300 competitors.
In the 62-mile Killer, Christopher Prendergast finished in 2:50:54 to win with Maria Doering the first women at 3:17:59.
Soloing in for the Thriller win was Patrick Collins (1:39:22 M) and Katie Spoelman-Vanacker (1:49:48 W) from a huge field of almost 2000 riders.
Teenager gravel racers Katja Opfer (0:57:33 W) and James Meyer (0:49:25 M) won the 18-mile Chiller sprint race.
The 2024 Barry-Roubaix is already planned for Saturday 20 April, with weather conditions to be determined…
