The 24th edition Granfondo Terre dei Varano has been selected for the 2023 Italian Granfondo National Championships and National University Cycling Championships on 18 June in the city of Camerino, 200 kilometers north of Rome.
“We are proud to have been selected for two such important events in the Italian cycling scene, confirming the high sporting and organizational level achieved by the event,” the Organizing Committee said in a press release.
The Italian Granfondo Championship, as the name implies, is only for Italian citizens with an Italian Cycling Federation (FCI) racing license (no one-day license entries). Competition for coveted Italian Tricolor national championship jerseys will take place on the “Marathon” route over a distance of 130 kilometers with 2700 vertical meters of ascent.
Taking place almost entirely within the Sibillini National Park, the route is one of the most stunning in the Marche Apennines, boasting safe and virtually traffic-free roads, lush green scenery, splendid medieval villages and many historical sites.
The Italian Cycling Federation will award 18 Individual Granfondo Champion titles in the following age/gender categories: 9 men’s (for the Elite Sport categories, Master 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8) and 9 women’s (for the Elite Women Sport categories, Master 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8). All champions will be awarded green-red-white tricolor jerseys similar to those awarded to professional riders. Non-Italian citizens may participate in the gran fondo, but are not eligible for championship titles.
A 105 kilometers long non-championship medio fondo with 1000 meters of climbing is also available.
