Tragedy struck the sixth edition of Trofeo Madonna della Fontana – Gran Fondo Fluorisoglia on Sunday, when a participant was killed in an automobile crash 30 kilometers from the finish line in southern Italy.

According to police, 58 year-old amateur racer Massimo Ferilli died after a high speed downhill crash into a Fiat 500 X driven by a 46-year-old man on his way home who had driven around barriers and onto the race route.

The organizer, ASD Team Fuorisoglia, issued the following statement on Monday:

“For us at Team Fuorisoglia it was not easy to deal with everything that happened yesterday. It was a terrible tragedy that caught all of us unprepared. A tragedy that first hits the Ferilli family, then his team Gc Capo Leuca, his closest friends and also our entire Fuorisoglia Team with the board and all the members. We only know that we have to be close to the family of our friend Massimo, close to his team. It is a moment for silence, a moment for prayer and moment for reflection.”

After learning of Ferelli’s death the organizers cancelled the event and award ceremony for the 120 kilometer long race that started in Francavilla Fontana with over 400 riders.
