GFNY Oaxaca, the fifth Mexican race in the worldwide GFNY granfondo series, was a huge success with 1300 participants from 25 countries, including former Tour de France rider Raul Alcala and the State Governor, Alejandro Murat, on Sunday 14 August in Oaxaca.

The 116 kilometer long gran fondo course with 1850 meters of climbing in the Oaxacan Mountains culminated on one of the longest climbs in Mexico to the summit of Ixtepeji. At 15 kilometers in length with an average gradient of 6%, and a few bits up to a whopping 19%, it is rated as an Hors Categorie, beyond categorization, climb.

The first hour of the event saw the front pack average over 50kph on flat roads. As the road turned upward though the field splintered apart and Miguel Arroyo Rosales used the final climb up Ixtepeji to drop riders off his rear wheel, one-by-one. At the finish line he was 32 seconds clear, earning victory in 2:51:20 and a free trip to the GFNY World Championships in New York City next May. Flavio de Luna (2:51:33) finished in second place and Jonathan Jiménez (2:51:55) was third.

Paola Mata won the women’s category in 3:21:58, followed by Claudia García (3:23:19) and Patricia Beltrán (3:25:36).

Raul Alcala, 58, opted to ride the 87km medio fondo and finished in 2:27:57, while Governor Murat, accompanied by a squad of heavily armed bodyguards wearing dark sunglasses and GFNY t-shirts, also rode the medio fondo and finished in 3:32:12.
