The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office has filed a murder charge against a driver who hit and killed an amateur cyclist at the end of a AIDS/Lifecycle group ride in Griffith Park over the weekend.
Andrew Jelmert was within sight of the finish line of a 67-mile group ride in Griffith Park on Saturday, when a BMW driven by 37 year-old Jairo Martinez allegedly ran Jelmert over from behind, according to court documents.
Jelmert died at the scene and now prosecutors have charged Martinez with murder, fatal hit-and-run and driving with a suspended license after receiving a driving under the influence (DUI) conviction.
Police say after the crash Martinez abandoned the BMW, fled the scene, ran down an embankment and hid until park rangers located and arrested him. He appeared intoxicated, according to police.
Martinez remains incarcerated in the Los Angles County Jail with a $617,500 USD bail, according to booking records.
