The only South American UCI Gran Fondo World Championship qualifying race will now take place on 22 May due to venue conflicts with the world’s largest springtime party – Carnival in Rio de Janiero.

In January the colorful Carnival festival moved from February to late April/May due to an increase in Omicron COVID-19 cases throughout Brazil.

But it was not until March that Brazilian officials ordered UCI Gran Fondo Rio de Janiero to move their event dates due to the major traffic issues caused by operating two large events in the city on the weekend of 1 May.

With over 80,000 Carnival spectators, partygoers and bronzed samba dancers expected in the city of Rio de Janiero and on the beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema, the cycling event had no choice but to change dates.

The race will now start and finish at the 2016 Olympic Golf Course in Barra da Tijuc on 22 May.
