The province of Alicante in Valencia, Spain will host the first Gran Fondo Aitana Tour on 5 June 2022 and then plans to join the UCI Gran Fondo World Series in 2023.
“The organization has already confirmed that the 2023 edition will be included in the calendar of the UCI, International Cycling Union in its Gran Fondo version,” the organizers announced at a press conference.
The event offers two impressive routes along the Mediterranean coast, a gran fondo worthy of a “Queen Stage” label with 157 kilometres and 3200 metres of vertical ascent and medio fondo of 113 kilometres with 2400 metres vertical. Six categorized climbs, including Confrides, Tudons, Rates and Sa Creueta, with road gradients up to 13.5 percent will challenge even the fittest amateur cyclists.
An impressive cast of top cycling celebrities will participate in the event, including La Vuelta a España 2001 winner Ángel Casero, five-times Spanish cyclocross champion Felipe Orts, and Carlos Sastre, winner of the 2008 Tour de France and podium finisher in all three Grand Tours – the Giro, Tour and Vuelta.
