Federico Pozzetto started the 2022 Italian gran fondo season just like he did in 2021, by winning Gran Fondo Città di Loano with an arms-up victory salute as he crossed the finish line with teammate Luca Chiesa.
Riding for the new amateur Vivo-MG.K Vis-Dal Colle – AG Cores gran fondo team, Pozzetto and Chiesa carried out a perfectly timed race plan on Sunday 6 February to set up their 1-2 finish on a 110 kilometre course along the Italian Riviera.
Chiesa, winner of the 2021 Nove Colli race, attacked on the main climb, quickly building a 50 second lead, while Pozzetto stayed in the main group resting before launching a strong attack to bridge up to Chiesa. The two teammates than worked well together to maintain their time gap on a chasing group of nine riders all the way to the finish line in Loano.
Niki Giussani (Asnaghi Gran Fondo) won the group sprint for third after a strong lead out by teammate Andrea Miotto.
