2021 feels a lot like 2020 as the UCI Gran Fondo World Series continues canceling races on a weekly basis now due to the ongoing pandemic.
UCI Around Samcheok in South Korea announced today that dangerous pandemic conditions in the country have forced the 22 August race to cancel for the second year in a row.
“The scheduled UCI GFWS Around Samcheok 2021 tournament is canceled for this year. For the participants who have been waiting, we have prepared for the event by establishing quarantine measures for participants, such as PCR inspection, and preventive measures for the operation of the competition. However, after a long discussion, Samcheok City and the Office of Man
agement are trying to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in the region for safety of participants as it is considered to be dangerous to hold the event.” UCI Around Samcheok
Organisers are uncertain if the event will return in 2022.
The UCI also announced cancellation of Greece’s Gran Fondo World Series race, UCI Aristoteles – Chalkidiki Gran Fondo, planned for 29 August in Macedonia Greece.
After cancelling thirteen UCI Gran Fondo World Series races so far this year, only seven events tentatively remain before the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships in October. Riders must finish in the top 25% at a Gran Fondo World Series race in order to qualify for the World Championships. (Editor’s note: Is it still a World Championship if most of the world cannot qualify and attend?)
