Italian Federico Pozzetto returned to the top step of the podium at Granfondo On-Energy on Sunday after besting his four breakaway companions in the final sprint to the finish in Loano, Italy.

Riccardo Zacchi was second, Marcello Ugazio third and Matteo Crosa fourth.  Guest of honor Davide Rebellin was the last member of the breakaway, but out of contention as a former professional.

Due to severe bad weather that hit the Savona region on Friday night, 20km of the route, including the climb to Quazzo, had to be bypassed, leaving only a short 50 kilometres to contest the race for the 300 participants.

With only one climb, Scravaion, on the shortened route Pozzetto used it to set up the winning break of five riders and distance the field.

In the women’s race it was Ylenia Fazzone from Cuneo who was fastest, beating Valentina Castellino at the line. Third place and three minutes behind was Federica Morano.

Granfondo On-Energy is the third event of the Loabikers Trophy competition.  Next weekend, 11 October, riders will line up for the fourth event, Granfondo Ceriale.
