Mark Satkiewicz, an avid amateur road and gravel cyclist, co-founder of the world famous SBT GRVL bike race and former president of Smartwool clothing company, died on Saturday according to the local Steamboat Springs, Colorado USA coroner.
He was 51.
Satkiewicz is survived by his wife, Amy, and two daughters, Olivia and Mia.
A Steamboat Springs resident, Satkiewicz was cycling Saturday afternoon on County Road 82 when he suffered a heart-related medical incident and died at the scene.
SBT GRVL released the following statement:
“It is with overwhelming sadness that we share the news of Mark Satkiewicz’s passing. Mark died of a cardiac incident while on a ride yesterday. Mark was an incredible husband, father and friend and we are shocked and extremely saddened by the sudden loss of this beloved member of the gravel community.
We are immensely grateful for Mark’s vision for SBT GRVL – to create an inclusive community experience. His vision and leadership were instrumental in the event’s continued success. His passion and drive to grow the sport of cycling will be missed everyday.
Our hearts are with his family during this very difficult time.”
Satkiewicz had suffered from heart issues in the past, the coroner noted, but a final cause of death has not yet been determined.
