Following the latest British Columbia provincial government health directives, the 2020 UCI Gran Fondo World Championships, Vancouver-Whistler, Canada scheduled in September has been cancelled.
The promoter issued the following statement today, “On Wednesday May 6th the provincial government of British Columbia announced their 4 phase re-opening plan for the province. Events and mass gatherings, including the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships Vancouver / Whistler, will only be permitted within the fourth phase of the planned normalization of operations, and would fall past our scheduled date. Given this announcement we have no alternative but to cancel this year’s UCI Gran Fondo World Championships in Vancouver / Whistler.”
British rider Louise Gibson was quick to note her disappointment on Twitter, “Just heard the UCI Gran Fondo World Champs are cancelled this year. The race was set to be in Sept, Vancouver – Whistler. I qualified when I came 3rd in the Elite Female World Series race in Dubai a few months ago & couldn’t wait to represent my country again! Maybe next year?”
Registered riders will not receive a refund, but may transfer entry to the 2021 RBC Granfondo Whistler.
The UCI has not commented on whether riders who qualified for the 2020 Gran Fondo World Championship will automatically qualify for the 2021 UCI Gran Fondo World Championship planned in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
